Millennium Sportsclub Vacaville joins Pound For Pound Challenge

Pound For Pound Challenge is underway and the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano welcomes the support of Millennium Sportsclub Vacaville.  For the third consecutive year, Feeding America and NBC’s The Biggest Loser have partnered with General Mills and Subway to encourage Americans to “Lose Nationally, Feed Locally”.

Take the challenge to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight and you help both yourself and your community to be healthier.  Pound For Pound Challenge will donate 11 cents to Feeding America for every pound pledged (up to a maximum donation of $1,040,000).  Feeding America will then distribute the money to the local food bank of your choice.  You can pledge your goals at www.pfpchallenge.com.

We at the Food Bank thank community partner Millennium Sportsclub Vacaville for getting the word out to its members.  You can check them out at www.milleniumsportsclub.com.

Walk to Give & Get Healthy

Join us weekly as we “Walk to Give & Get Healthy”. The walks will take place every Sunday from 2pm to 3:30pm. Each walk will start off with a 15 minute warm up, followed by an hour walk then a 15 minute cool down. Our first walk will take place at Heather Farms Park Sunday 2/27 at 2pm.

Please email Veronica Wimer  at vwimer@foodbankccs.org if you can make it and I will give you detailed directions of where we will meet up. Feel free to extend the invite out to friends/pets/family and encourage them to pledge (non-monetary) to lose or maintain a healthy weight at www.pfpchallenge.com.

Favorite and Seasonal Recipes from the Pound For Pound Challenge

NBC’s The Biggest Loser, General Mills, Subway, and food banks around the country are partnering on the Pound For Pound Challenge for the third year in a row. For every pound of weight participants pledge to lose, a pound of food (or 5 pounds to maintain a healthy weight) will be donated to a local food bank (like ours). When you sign up for the Pound For Pound Challenge at www.pfpchallenge.com,  you can immediately join a team –our team’s name is “Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano” – or create your own. You can also join our group “Pound For Pound Challenge – Contra Costa and Solano” on facebook for support and event updates.

In an effort to keep our Pound For Pound Challenge teammates motivated and focused on their challenge, I thought it would be fun to highlight some favorite and seasonal recipes from the  Pound For Pound Challenge website on a weekly basis.

To kick off our first recipe of the 2011 Season, this week we are going to showcase our Pound For Pound Challenge Champion’s favorite breakfast recipe, Patti’s Melt (links to recipes listed below).

Patti's Melt

Patti's Melt

In addition to Patti’s Melt, we have two seasonal recipes highlighting oranges and beets: Orange-Glazed Chicken with Rosemary and Roasted Beet Salad.

Beets and oranges are high in vitamin C, key nutrients that boost the immune system.

Eat Better America! – Not only is exercise important in achieving your weight loss goal but eating right is a key component to facilitating weight loss and keeping it off.

The Food Bank is Stepping Up to the Challenge!

The Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano, a member of the Feeding America network,  is partnering with the TV show The Biggest Loser to inspire people through the Pound for Pound Challenge to do something good for themselves and good for their community by pledging either to lose up to 50 pounds or to maintain a current healthy weight.

pound for pound challengeWe are so fortunate to have Patti Anderson, a wonderfully inspiring local lady as our Pound for Pound Challenge Champion. Patti was a contestant on The Biggest Loser episode 9 and despite being voted off early she was determined not to let that early dismissal derail her from her “get healthy” goal. If you would like to join us and the thousands of other local residents to “Lose Nationally, Feed Locally” we would love to have your support. Participation is easy, all you need to do is sign up and pledge your weight loss goals at www.pfpchallenge.com. For every pound you pledge, the Pound for Pound Challenge will donate 11 cents to Feeding America – enough to deliver one pound of groceries to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. The more sign ups and pledges a food bank has from its area, the more funds it receives.

Pound For Pound Challenge

For the second consecutive year, Feeding America will partner with General Mills, Subway, 24 Hour Fitness, Walgreens, The Biggest Loser to encourage Americans to lose weight through the Pound For Pound Challenge. For every pound pledged, the Pound for Pound Challenge sponsors will donate 14 cents to Feeding America, up to a maximum donation of $800,000. We even have a facebook group you can join to share ideas and get support.
