Food Day is a nationwide celebration of healthy, affordable, and sustainably produced food. October 19, 2014 Food Day Food Drive at Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve  

The California Institute for Rural Studies will be showing “Fair Food Field to Table,” with speakers and a healthy food drive. This is one of only three Food Day events in Solano County. The event is at the Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve at 1595 Railroad Avenue in Vallejo (on Mare Island). You won’t want to miss the screening and discussion afterwards. October 18, 2014 Bags & Brews Fall Classic Cornhole Tournament (11:00am-6:00pm)

Join the CA Beer Society for a fun, festive Saturday as they partner with Black Diamond Brewery and the Food Bank during the 2nd Annual Bags & Brews Fall Classic Cornhole Tournament! The event will take place on October 18th from 11am – 6pm at Black Diamond Brewery in Concord. Cost is $25 per team of 2 and a full tournament consists of 64 teams, so make sure to tell your friends! Black Diamond will supply beer specials to those who bring canned goods to donate. October 1, 2014 "Food Day" Food Drive at Contra Costa County Libraries – October 1-24

Celebrate “Food Day” by donating a bag of nonperishable food to a food bank barrel at one of the Contra Costa County libraries from October 1st through October 24th (the official Food Day). At the same time, check out a book on nutrition, healthy eating and food education. Let’s fill up the barrels by sharing healthy food with those in need in our community. You provide the nonperishable food and we will add the healthy fresh fruits and vegetables!

September 27, 2014 Pleasant Hill Community Service Day

Become a part of something really special! Pleasant Hill’s 10th annual Community Service Day is on Saturday, September 27th. Volunteers can help with a variety of projects including a neighborhood food drive. Gather at Pleasant Hill Park at 7:30am to receive a pancake breakfast and get your free t-shirt. Volunteers will go door to door in their neighborhood to collect food for the Food Bank. You will then bring the collected food back to the park where we will sort and box the food donations for distribution. We will provide new paper bags for you and samples of flyers. This is a great project for scouts, church groups, school children, neighborhood groups and anyone else that would like to help collect food for our neighbors in need. September 27, 2014 Walnut Creek Community Service Day

Roll up your sleeves and be prepared to volunteer on Saturday, September 27th as the city of Walnut Creek hosts their 4th annual Community Service Day!  There will be a variety of projects available, including a neighborhood food drive.  We will provide bags and flyers for you in advance.  You’ll kick off the day at Heather Farm Park at 7:30am for a pancake breakfast. After breakfast you will go door to door in your neighborhood to collect food for the Food Bank. Bring the bags of food back to the park where we will sort and box the food donations.  This is a great project for scouts, church groups, school children, neighborhood groups and anyone else that would like to help collect food for our neighbors in need. Photos for Food is a campaign that was started by Nathan Osmond of Life In Contrast Photography in an effort to give back to the communities that have supported him over the years. By booking a “Photos for Food” portrait session you can be sure to receive a beautiful set of family photos as well as knowing that you are helping those in need in our community. August 17, 2014 Golden Gate Fields – Free Admission Food Drive

On August 17 Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano and Alameda County Community Food Bank will join forces with Golden Gate Fields to collect canned food to jump start the holiday season. We will be located at both entrances (Grandstand and Clubhouse). Everyone who brings 3 cans of food will receive a Clubhouse or Grand Stand admission pass to enter for free on this day. Not only will you be helping out your community but you will be able to enjoy a free live concert during the races. Plus, its dollar days so beers, sodas, waters and hot dogs are just $1! August 2, 2014 Moraga Pear Harvest – August 2 & 3

Moraga Pear Harvest will be held Saturday, August 2nd and Sunday August 3rd between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm at the corner of Canyon Rd and Camino Pablo. This annual event is organized by the Moraga Park Foundation and their members will be on hand to provide direction. Volunteers will be picking pears which will be picked up each day by the Food Bank.  Individuals and families are welcome to come and help for a few hours. Wear sturdy shoes or boots (the ground is not suitable for sandals or flip flops).  Pear picking tools will be provided. All of the pears will go out to those in need in our community the week following the pear picking!

July 19, 2014 1st Annual Clayton 5K Run & Fitness Fair FOOD DRIVE

Bring nonperishable food to the 1st Annual Clayton 5k Run & Fitness Fair on Saturday 7/19 at the Clayton Community Park (lower level at the cross streets of Marsh Creek Road and Regency Drive). Your bag of food is your entry fee for this fun event coordinated as a Girl Scout Gold Award Project. Food Bank Ambassadors will have a table with information and giveaways for kids. Check in between 7:15am and 8am. There will be fitness booths, a kid zone for the children, CPR demonstrations and lots more. June 30, 2014 Grocery Outlet Food Drive – Now – July 31

Grocery Outlet stores are conducting their fourth annual Independence from Hunger food drive during the month of July. You can help feed our community two different ways:

  • Look for specially-marked food items at your local Grocery Outlet. Purchase these items and place them in the collection bins at the front of the store. There will also be pre-packaged bags that provide a healthy meal choice for families in need so purchase a bag of food and make your shopping easy!
  • Tell a Grocery Outlet cashier that you’d like to make a cash donation at the register. Donations will go directly to the local food assistance agencies in your community.

The Food Bank has barrels at the Concord Grocery Outlet at 1840 Willow Pass Road (across the street from the Park and Shop Center) and the Pinole Grocery Outlet at 1460 Fitzgerald Avenue. Our partner agencies have barrels at the other Grocery Outlet stores in our two counties. No matter which Grocery Outlet store you shop at, make sure you purchase some of the specials and place the food in the barrels or make a cash donation to help members of our community put food on their table.

The 25th annual KidFest will be in downtown Concord on Memorial Day Weekend: May 24 through May 26 from 10am to 6pm at Mt. Diablo High School (2450 Grant Street in Concord – near John Muir Hospital). Named a “2011 Best Place to take your Kids for Fun” by the annual Best of Claycord poll, KidFest is a fun and educational event for children and their families. May 12, 2014 Drive Fore Break on Hunger Golf Classic

Register a golf foursome for a day of birdies, eagles and other ornithological golf moments, to be held on Monday May 12th at Oakhurst Country Club. May 9, 2014 The Art of John Lennon – May 9 – 11

Continuing the Lennon legacy of peace and love, Yoko Ono, Legacy Productions & Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano are proud to bring The Art of John Lennon to downtown Walnut Creek for Mother’s Day weekend May 9th to 11th. Few people know that John did not pick up a guitar for 5 of the last 7 years. Few people know that John did not pick up a guitar for 5 of the last 7 years of his life. During those years he channeled his philosophy through his drawings. They, along with earlier sketches and song lyrics make up nearly the nearly 100 limited edition lithographs, serigraphs and copper etchings that will be on display. His artwork is both inspirational and generational. John leaves behind a potent message for future generations. These exhibits have not only been a forum to view John as an artist but also as a venue to raise funds and awareness for countless local charities. This exhibit will be benefitting Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. For the past 20+ years Yoko has brought this collection around the world as meeting place for Lennon, Beatles, peace, music, humanitarian, activist, lyricist, satirist and icon fans from all different walks of life.

23rd Annual Food From the Bar Food/Fund Drive. Contra Costa County attorneys will once again hold their annual drive to benefit the Food Bank from April 28th through May 9th. This is a great way for law firms to have fun while collecting food and money. Some participants form teams to compete, and offices use creative fundraising ideas like Bake Sales, Carnival Day, and Survivor Day. Some people have even shaved their heads to collect donations! There will be a multi-firm Walk-A-Thon around downtown Walnut Creek. Even better – there’s a Cyber Competition! April 6, 2014 CROP Fight Hunger Walk

Fight hunger and poverty around the corner and around the world

Communities from Sonoma to the South Bay will come together this spring to fight hunger at home and around the world when they participate in the Bay Area Hunger Walk. Held annually, the purpose of the Walk is not only to raise money to fight hunger, but raise awareness about the many people around the world who must daily walk to secure basic necessities such as food and water. On April 6th caring people from across the Bay area will show the world that fighting hunger is more than a catch phrase – it’s a call to act, a call to Walk!

Walk registration will take place behind the Ferry Building, 289 Mare Island Way, Vallejo, on Sunday, 4/6, at 1:30pm.  The Walk begins at 2:00pm. The route will follow a path along the picturesque Mare Island Shoreline. So, pull out your walking shoes, enjoy a day out of doors and the beauty of the Mare Island waterfront, while joining your community in walking for hunger! March 26, 2014 Art Contest! Get featured on a Food Bank Tote Bag – Now – May 15

The Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano is looking for original artwork that will be used to create custom eco-friendly tote bags. The tote bags will be used to generate funds that support our services for people in need.

Anyone may submit artwork in the contest. Enter as often as you wish. The winning entries will be selected by a panel of Food Bank staff members and announced by June 1, 2014.

Every year, Curves International, Inc. conducts a nationwide food drive during the month of March. Curves is the largest chain of fitness centers for women in the world. They are famous for their 30-minute Circuit that works every major muscle group with strength training, cardio and stretching and always has a coach to help members with proper form, answer questions and offer encouragement. Members are asked to bring in bags of non-perishable food to help others in need in the community. Membership fees are waived for new members who bring in a bag of food. February 2, 2014 Souper Bowl of Caring

Hunger and poverty have a negative impact on individuals and the communities in which they live, yet there is joy in serving and giving to those in need. Why not use Super Bowl weekend, a time when people come together for football and fun, to also unify the nation for a higher good: collecting dollars and canned food for people in your community?

Souper Bowl of Caring is a national movement of young people working to fight hunger and poverty in their own communities around the time of the Super Bowl football game. In the weeks leading up to or on Super Bowl Sunday, Churches, Schools and Service Clubs take up a collection (many use a soup pot) asking for one dollar or one item of food for people in need. Incorporating soup bowls or pots reminds people that even a bowl of soup is often hard to get for those in need. Get involved in this simple, yet powerful movement of caring. December 10, 2013 Give Where You Live and Join us for a Party with ABC7 at the Food Bank!

ABC7 and Bay Area food banks are working together to collect much needed food and cash donations this holiday season. Join the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano on December 10th between 4:00 and 7:00 pm as ABC7 broadcasts live from our warehouse in Concord. ABC7 will be live telling stories from Food Bank clients, member agencies, donors and volunteers. We will have snacks, games, and a festive atmosphere. Come by, bring a donation and meet an ABC7 meteorologist in person.

You can also help ABC7 feed the Bay Area this holiday season with their ‘Give Where You Live’ pledge! With each pledge, ABC7 will donate $1 to Bay Area food banks, up to $75,000.

November 28, 2013 Fit 2 the Core Turkey Day Damage Control Workout

What will YOU be doing on Turkey Day?  To leave room for the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, pie and of course Grandma’s famous sweet potatoes with those itty bitty marshmallows, some of us will forgo breakfast, some of us will even do a turkey day run.  But to do SERIOUS DAMAGE CONTROL BEFORE THE BIG FEAST, there is only one thing to do.  The Turkey Day Bootcamp on Thanksgiving morning at 9:00 am at Fit 2 the Core, 2956 Treat Blvd. Suite D. in Concord.

This year instead of sitting around and watching the Thanksgiving fun on TV, get out and be part of the fun at the annual Nitro Turkey Thanksgiving Run around Pinole Regional Park in Richmond. Brazen Racing is hosting a 5K/10K/and kids Little Turkeys Race where children 10 and under will race against Nitro Turkey in a 100 yard dash on Thanksgiving morning, and one thing’s for sure, you will earn your feast! This holiday season, Contra Costa Oncology has partnered with the Downtown Walnut Creek on Ice skating rink to help raise awareness for the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. For every skating ticket that is collected at the rink, Contra Costa Oncology will make a donation to the Food Bank.   The rink is open all through the holiday season, closing  January 12.  So come get your skate on and help fill a plate!

For every $1 you donate, Bank of America will give $2 more to fight hunger.

  • Donations can be made through www.feedingamerica.org/bankofamerica or www.bankofamerica.com/give
  • For every dollar a consumer donates, Bank of America will match 2:1.
  • Consumers can choose to give to their local food bank (based on billing zip code) or to the Feeding America national office.
  • $1,000 match cap per donor (one time only). BoA will only match a total of $1,000 — If an individual donates $500 on one day, and donates $700 another day, only $1,000 of the total will be matched.
  • Foundations or companies donations will not be matched.
  • Bank of America will distribute funds to the Feeding America national office sometime in March 2014. The Feeding America national office will then allocate funds to food banks according to the funds disbursement schedule.

November 16, 2013 Scouting For Food

Scouts across the Bay Area will be collecting food on this one day food drive called Scouting For Food. The weekend before they will place door hangers on homes that they will return to on Saturday, November 16. Simply put a bag of food out on your porch that morning for the scouts and they will deliver it to the Food Bank. If you do not receive a door hanger, you can still donate by bringing the food to your local Bay Area Food Bank or one of the locations listed on the Year Round Food Drive list.

November 13, 2013 NBC/Safeway “Help Us End Hunger” Food Drive – Now through December 25, 2013

During this event, Safeway will offer the opportunity to purchase a $10 pre-packed bag of groceries, which will be donated to your local food bank. You pay for the pre-packaged bag of groceries and place the bag in one of our in-store barrels, and the Food Bank pick up the food each week. This is a quick, easy, inexpensive way to donate. On November 23, Kiwanis volunteers will be out in force at most Safeway stores in the Bay Area encouraging you to donate. Watch NBC Bay Area all day on the 23rd for food drive coverage. Help us in the battle against hunger, shop Safeway during the holidays and buy a bag of groceries for your local Food Bank. Tell your friends!

November 13, 2013 Holiday Shares at Lucky and FoodMaxx – Now through January 2, 2014

The Holidays are upon us again! Lucky and FoodMaxx supermarkets are hosting their annual Holiday Shares program. From November 13 through January 2, Lucky and FoodMaxx will be selling $5, $10, $15 and $20 icons at checkout as direct donations for the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano Counties. As you know, for every dollar we receive, we are able to provide nine meals. While we love food donations—this case fundraiser provides us an even better opportunity to meet the needs of our community.

Last year the Food Bank raised $10,660 through this program at Lucky—and this year the program has been expanded to the FoodMaxx stores as well.  Let’s see if we can double that this year!

The Moraga Senior Golf Association will be hosting “The Turkey Shoot” golf tournament benefitting the Food Bank on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at Moraga Country Club with a 8:30am shotgun start. The Express Employment Professionals office in Concord will host a Pay it Forward Hiring Drive to put 100 unemployed individuals to work this holiday season.  Join them in their effort to help put 100 people to work in our community in ten weeks bringing hope and encouragement to them and their families.  Express will donate $10 for each associate put to work. Contra Costa County and Solano County employees compete to see who can raise the most money for the Food Bank. Each year, the county bringing in the highest dollar amount per employee wins possession of the coveted “Big Apple” trophy.

November  1, 2013 through January 1, 2014 you can help Feed 4 More at Whole Foods Market.
