April 6, 2014 CROP Fight Hunger Walk

Fight hunger and poverty around the corner and around the world

Communities from Sonoma to the South Bay will come together this spring to fight hunger at home and around the world when they participate in the Bay Area Hunger Walk. Held annually, the purpose of the Walk is not only to raise money to fight hunger, but raise awareness about the many people around the world who must daily walk to secure basic necessities such as food and water. On April 6th caring people from across the Bay area will show the world that fighting hunger is more than a catch phrase – it’s a call to act, a call to Walk!

Walk registration will take place behind the Ferry Building, 289 Mare Island Way, Vallejo, on Sunday, 4/6, at 1:30pm.  The Walk begins at 2:00pm. The route will follow a path along the picturesque Mare Island Shoreline. So, pull out your walking shoes, enjoy a day out of doors and the beauty of the Mare Island waterfront, while joining your community in walking for hunger! For more information or to register, go to – www.bayareahungerwalk.org.

February 2, 2014 Souper Bowl of Caring

Hunger and poverty have a negative impact on individuals and the communities in which they live, yet there is joy in serving and giving to those in need. Why not use Super Bowl weekend, a time when people come together for football and fun, to also unify the nation for a higher good: collecting dollars and canned food for people in your community?

Souper Bowl of Caring is a national movement of young people working to fight hunger and poverty in their own communities around the time of the Super Bowl football game. In the weeks leading up to or on Super Bowl Sunday, Churches, Schools and Service Clubs take up a collection (many use a soup pot) asking for one dollar or one item of food for people in need. Incorporating soup bowls or pots reminds people that even a bowl of soup is often hard to get for those in need. Get involved in this simple, yet powerful movement of caring. Contact Michaela at (925) 677-7019 or mnilson@foodbankccs.org.

September 5, 2013 CANCELLED Business Behaving Well: Social Responsibility, an interactive discussion with Ron Elsdon

This event has been cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Without vibrant communities, business is not as successful. Recent economic turmoil and growing economic inequality have shined more light on the negative impact of a strictly market-driven dogma, while highlighting the importance of business’ role in the strength of the community around them. By making enlightened public policy and social responsibility a priority, business booms and communities thrive.  In this interactive session we will explore the need for such practices, and the implications for organizations, for leadership and for each of us as individuals.

The session will enable participants to:

  • Establish links between social justice, social responsibility and business practice
  • Identify stakeholders affected by organizations and links to social responsibility
  • Learn of examples of social responsibility
  • Describe actions for organizations and individuals that address social responsibility

Ron Elsdon is founder and President of Elsdon, Inc.  Ron specializes in the workforce and career development fields, providing organizational consulting, individual career counseling and coaching, public speaking, publishing and lecturing.  He has more than 25 years of leadership experience at diverse organizations.  He has also been active in speaking, writing about, and promoting a range of social causes.  Ron is editor of Business Behaving Well: Social Responsibility, from Learning to Doing (Potomac Books, Inc., 2013), editor of Building Workforce Strength: Creating Value through Workforce and Career Development (Praeger, 2010), and author of Affiliation in the Workplace: Value Creation in the New Organization (Praeger, 2003.  He holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Cambridge University, a Master’s degree in Career Development from John F. Grocery Outlet stores are conducting their third annual Independence from Hunger food drive during the month of July. You can help feed our community two different ways:

  • Look for specially-marked food items at your local Grocery Outlet. Purchase those items and place them in the collection bin at the front of the store.

April 1, 2013 Vote to Provide Fresh Fruits and Vegetables to Kids – April 1 – 30

Help Us Win $45,000 to Provide Fruits and Veggies to Kids!

The Farm 2 Kids program provides children in low-income areas with 3-5 pounds of fresh produce per week. Sometimes it is the only food they have for dinner.

As part of their Fighting Hunger Together initiative, Walmart is giving out grants for the most innovative and effective programs that help alleviate child hunger. Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano is in the running to win one of 100 grants, but we need your help to win!

 Here’s How it Works

April 1 through April 30, go to www.foodbankccs.org/walmart to vote for our project. You can vote once a day, so please vote as often as you can.

You do not have to “like” Walmart on Facebook to participate, but do need a Facebook account. Contact Rachel if you have more questions, rbraver@foodbankccs.org or 925.677.7011.

Funding for child hunger programs is especially critical considering the need that exists. Here in Contra Costa and Solano counties, 1 in 6 children struggle with hunger. The Walmart grant would go a long way to helping ensure that all children have access to the food they need to thrive.

Please share this with your friends and family!
