Cupcake War!

Local cake decorating experts declare a Cupcake War! Master cake decorator and sugar artist Jan Loomis will join other local cake decorators/pastry chefs Tracy Wirta, Mitchel Hughes of Spun Sugar, Berkeley and Marla Erojo of Cakes made by M.E., Oakland  in a cupcake competition in the Dessert Tasting Tents at “An Afternoon in the Admiral’s Garden”. Celebrity guests will judge and guests will sample!

Take an express trip to the tropics on Sunday, June 26th at the Food Bank’s 11th annual Admiral’s Garden fundraising event! Mark your calendar and don’t miss this fabulous event of the summer.

This year local master sugar artists/ cake decorators and pastry chefs have declared a Cupcake War in the Dessert Tasting Tents! Watch Jan Loomis, Tracy Wirta, Mitchell Hughes and Marla Erojo decorate cupcakes and compete. Celebrity judges will decide who will win the Cupcake War!

Mingle and chat with Survivor TV stars Yau-Man Chan, Sylvia Kwan, Chad Crittenden, Sonja Christopher, Cecilia Mansilla and other local media celebrities.

You’ll feel the sand between your toes as you enjoy the authentic Caribbean music of Shabang Steel Drum Band. And, back by popular demand are the Singing Blue Stars of the USS Hornet taking the party back to the swinging sounds of the 40’ and 50’s. Add to the musical line-up DJ’s Denon & Doyle.

The fun starts at 12 noon with the opening of the Wine and Appetizer Tasting Tents and live music by Shabang. Contra Costa County wins the Big Apple trophy

Contra Costa County wins the Big Apple trophy in Holiday Food Fight 2010!  Contra Costa County Supervisors and Food Fight team leaders show off the Big Apple and other awards presented by Larry Sly at the February 8 Board of Supervisors meeting.  Together, Contra Costa and Solano County employees raised over $143,000 for the Food Bank during the 2010 holiday season!

Last week for Counties Care Food Fight!

In the final week of the Counties Care Holiday Food Fight Solano County employees have pulled ahead of Contra Costa County employees!

Solano County employees have raised $17,440.11 or $7.10 per employee compared to Contra Costa County employees $44,523.64 or $6.82 per employee.  The Food Fight officially ends December 31st.  Go to to donate as a “friend” of the Food Fight in your county.  DONATE ON OR BEFORE DECEMBER 31 FOR A 2010 TAX DEDUCTION!

Counties Care Food Fight

In week three of the Counties Care Food Fight, Contra Costa County employees have pulled ahead of Solano County employees! The race is on. Contra Costa County employees have collected $36,229.64 or $5.55 per employee and Solano County employees have collected $12,257.85 or $4.99 per employee.

Counties Care Holiday Food Fight week two

As the Counties Care Holiday Food Fight enters week two, Solano County is still in the lead with a grand total of $9,432.83 or $3.84 per employee.  Contra Costa County employees have collected  $16,790.11 or $2.57 per employee. Friendly “Food Fight” is off to a good start!

The Counties Care Holiday Food Fight is off and running! After the first week, Solano County is in the lead collecting $3,043 or $1.24 per employee. Close behind is Contra Costa County at $7,929.87 or $1.21 per employee.

In this competition employees of both counties sell Food Bank Buy A Bags, hold raffles and bake sales, and collect donations from fellow employees anyway they can. The  goal is to collect the most dollars per employee to win the competition and hold possession of the coveted Big Apple Trophy for one year! To donate, go to

Food Fight 2010

The annual Counties Care Holiday Food Fight enters its seventh year this year.  Starting in 2003, Contra Costa County employees challenged Solano County employees to a Food Fight competition to raise funds for neighbors in their respective counties. The winning county was determined by the amount of funds raised per employee.

Funds are raised in a variety of ways including collecting donations for Food Bank Buy A Bags, holding bake sales, selling hot dogs, and any creative way county employees can think of to wrestle donations out of their fellow employees!  The prize for the winning county is possession of and bragging rights to the coveted Big Apple trophy for one year.

Local radio stations including KUIC, KKDV, and Gene Burns at KGO pitch in to help promote the drive, encouraging listeners to donate as a “friend of the Food Bank”. This brings in additional funding to the Food Bank however these funds are not included in the employee competition.

A total of $668,553.90 has been donated to the Food Bank since Counties Care Holiday Food Fight’s inception!

Each county has won three times and Solano County took home the trophy last year.  Although “friends of the Food Bank” donations do not help your county win the competition, your donation does help your neighbors in need win the fight against hunger.

The number of residents in both counties needing help with food grows daily. In 2009 the Food Bank provided food for over 108,000 residents per month.  In 2010 that number has jumped to over 132,000.   The need is great.  Please make a donation today!
